Diversity

I had heard people say that Vancouver was a city of migrants, but I really understood what it meant this last week. At a Parent-Infant meeting, the facilitator asked the maybe 20 mothers who were there how many were born in Vancouver. Only 2 raised their hand. Last weekend, we were out with 3 couples of friends. Of the 8 adults, none was born in Vancouver. Zakary was the only one born in BC, and 3 were actually from another country.

I guess it makes sense when you consider how much this city’s population has grown in the last 20 or 30 years: most of that growth was from migrants from other provinces or countries. But now all those babies around us form a brand new generation of Vancouverites who will consider this city, this province and this country as their home, even though many of their parents won’t. I wonder how we, as parents, will deal with that in 15 or 20 years…
